Jigawa State has joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2026 International Day of Education, with a strong emphasis on the role of young people in shaping the future of the education sector. 

The event, held in Dutse, brought together key stakeholders, students and development partners. 

The 2026 International Day of Education is being marked at a time when global attention is shifting towards youth participation in education planning and reforms.

At the Dr. Nuhu Sunusi Model Secondary School in Dutse, the Jigawa State Ministry of Basic Education, in collaboration with the Jigawa Education Accountability Forum and the Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria, gathered stakeholders to reflect on this year’s theme, “The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education.”

The Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board Prof. Haruna Musa, Chairman stressed that empowering young people to participate in decision-making will strengthen transparency and improve service delivery across schools in the state.

Hajiya Nafisa Halliru, JEAF representative also used the occasion to call for stronger community involvement in education governance.

PLANE representative Mrs. Jimmai reaffirmed their commitment to supporting youth-centered education initiatives in the state.

The celebration featured quiz competitions, drama performances and goodwill messages, all designed to encourage students to take ownership of their education.

Winners of the competitions expressed appreciation to God and the organizers for creating a platform that inspires learning and creativity.

Participants described the event as timely, noting that investing in youth leadership remains vital to sustainable development and future readiness.

The International Day of Education is observed annually to highlight the importance of education in peacebuilding, economic growth and social development.
