A new chapter in digital innovation and skills development has begun in Jigawa State with the official launch of the Blue Sapphire Hub, an initiative aimed at empowering young people, women, and underserved communities through technology-driven programmes.
The launch ceremony, held on Tuesday in Dutse at the hub’s newly established facility, brought together government officials, development partners, academics, and private sector stakeholders, underscoring a shared commitment to advancing digital inclusion and economic growth in the state.
Governor Umar Namadi, who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Higher Education, described the initiative as a welcome development that aligns with the state government’s vision of building a knowledge-based economy.
He commended the promoters of the hub for their foresight and pledged continued government support for programmes that enhance human capital development.
In a welcome address delivered on behalf of the founder, Maryam Lawan Gwadabe, by Engr. Suleiman Sani, the hub’s Executive Advisory Board member, participants were assured of the organisation’s commitment to fostering innovation and creating opportunities for the people of Jigawa State.
He outlined several ongoing interventions of the hub, including Women on Wednesday, 3MTT, Digital Community Champions, Digital Community Fair, and the Digital Access Programme, all designed to promote digital literacy and expand access to technology across communities.
Delivering a keynote address, Engr. Umar Sulaiman Sabo, speaking on behalf of the Director-General of the Jigawa State Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency, described the hub as more than just a physical structure.
According to him, “this hub represents a platform for innovation, collaboration, and economic growth,” noting that it would complement existing government initiatives such as the Jigawa Tech Talent Acquisition Programme, which is already equipping youths with skills in software development, networking, and digital design.
He added that the facility would serve as a central point for the state’s emerging technology ecosystem, offering co-working spaces, high-speed internet, mentorship, and access to investment opportunities.
In her goodwill message, the Commissioner for Women Affairs stressed the importance of girl-child education and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that empower women and girls through digital skills.
Also speaking virtually, Vincent Wang, representing the Taiwan Africa International Service Association, expressed readiness to partner with the hub in building local capacity.
He revealed that over 5,000 beneficiaries in Jigawa are expected to gain digital and technical skills through the collaboration, with opportunities for international employment.
The highlight of the event was the official unveiling of the facility by the Commissioner for Higher Education on behalf of the governor, who reiterated government readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders in driving digital transformation in the state.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Usman Fori, while Abubakar Ibrahim Machika commended participants and partners for their contributions to the successful launch.
The establishment of the Blue Sapphire Hub is widely seen as a strategic step towards positioning Jigawa State as a growing centre for innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive digital development in Nigeria.
