The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Kano Operations Office today joined the global community to commemorate the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), held at the Agency’s premises in Kano, with the theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters.”
The event brought together key stakeholders and partners in disaster management, including the Commandant of the Federal Fire Service, the State Coordinator of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), the State Director of the Kano State Fire Service, the representative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Commandant, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Executive Secretaries of the State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) of Kano and Jigawa States, the Branch Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Kano Chapter, officials of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Commandant, and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
In his keynote address, the Head of Operations, Mr. Nura Abdullahi emphasized the importance of prioritizing investment in resilience, preparedness, and prevention measures rather than waiting to fund disasters after they occur. He noted that sustainable resilience reduces human suffering, economic losses, and environmental degradation while strengthening communities against recurring hazards.
As part of the program, the operational assets and equipment available at the office were showcased to the stakeholders, demonstrating the Agency’s operational capacity to respond effectively to emergencies across the region.
As part of the ceremony, the Executive Director of the Initiative for Health, Rescue and Risk Reduction (IHRAR) presented an award of recognition to the Head of Operations, Mr. Nura Abdullahi, in appreciation of his leadership and outstanding contribution to disaster management and risk reduction in Kano and the surrounding states.
The gathering reinforced the need for stronger institutional collaboration, increased funding for resilience initiatives, and continued public awareness on disaster preparedness at all levels.
The event concluded with a group photograph and renewed commitment among participants to build safer and more resilient communities across Northern Nigeria.
