A stakeholder in Gwaram Local Government Area, Aminu Abdullahi Madaki Gwaram, has defended the efforts of the local government chairman in addressing water supply challenges, while calling for greater accountability among public office holders and community leaders.
In a statement made available to journalists, Madaki alleged that some political actors have been using the issue of water scarcity as a campaign tool against a particular political party, despite not being directly responsible for providing the fuel used to operate water facilities.
He further claimed that some individuals who hold positions within the ruling party are working against the party’s interests by allegedly undermining its leadership and development initiatives.
According to him, authorities should identify and investigate those allegedly responsible for actions that hinder the developmental efforts being undertaken by the Chairman of Gwaram Local Government.
Madaki stated that since assuming office, the chairman has made significant efforts to tackle water shortages across the local government.
He said the administration rehabilitated about nine faulty and non-functional boreholes, repaired water pumping equipment and electricity infrastructure, and replaced stolen cables used for both public security lights and electricity supply.
However, he expressed concern that some individuals continue to sabotage these efforts through the destruction of water pipelines and the theft of electrical and security-light cables.
He added that the chairman has intervened on several occasions to address water-related problems and has embarked on the provision of two solar-powered boreholes in each ward of the local government. According to him, each of the boreholes is expected to provide water for more than 1,000 residents.
Madaki also acknowledged the contribution of the member representing Gwaram Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Shitu Galambi, whom he credited with providing two additional solar-powered boreholes capable of serving over 1,000 people each.
The stakeholder argued that many of those blaming the chairman for the water situation may not fully understand the nature and complexity of the challenges facing the sector.
He claimed that a large percentage of critics are unaware of the underlying factors contributing to the recurring problems.
He also cautioned against what he described as attempts by some office holders to discredit political leaders for personal or political gain, stressing that loyalty, honesty and fairness should guide public service.
Madaki urged residents of Gwaram to carefully assess the performance of individuals entrusted with public responsibilities before passing judgment on elected leaders.
He said community members should monitor those managing public resources and ensure that such responsibilities are not exploited for personal benefit.
He further questioned the effectiveness of some community development committees, arguing that they should play a more active role in identifying local challenges, reporting them to relevant authorities and contributing to efforts aimed at finding lasting solutions.
The stakeholder concluded by praying for continued peace, unity and development in Gwaram Local Government Area, Jigawa State and Nigeria at large.
“Before we rush to blame our leaders, we must understand the realities of the challenges and support efforts aimed at finding solutions for the benefit of the people,” he said.
